  2. Nighttime/Bedtime Phase: Visualizing the problem and its resolution in the Alpha brainwave state — then utilizing the Delta brainwave state experienced during sleep for enhanced effectiveness.

Step 1: Daytime Contemplation: Identify the Problem

  • Identify and analyze a specific problem you are facing in your life, something significant that you are mentally struggling with.
  • Set aside a quiet moment during the day, preferably in the morning, to sit down and contemplate the particular problem.
  • Keep your eyes open and refrain from entering a meditative state.

Step 2: Create a Mental Movie of the Problem (Eyes Open)

  • While remaining in the waking state and keeping your eyes open, visualize yourself or someone else filming a short video that vividly depicts the details of the problem. What do you see?
  • Make the video as colorful and vivid as possible, as if it is informing higher intelligence about the aspect of your life you wish to resolve.
  • Acknowledge the associated emotions triggered by this problem, observing the discomfort and distress it brings.
  • Keep the mental video concise, capturing the essence of the issue. Don’t spend more than two minutes watching the movie.

Step 3: Replay the Video with Eyes Closed

  • Staying in the waking state, but this time with your eyes closed, replay the mental video you just created, visualizing the problem and associated emotions again. Do this for 90 seconds.
  • This step helps reinforce your understanding of the issue.
  • Afterward, set aside the mental image of your problem and proceed with your day.

Step 4: Nighttime Preparation: Accessing the Alpha State

As bedtime approaches, it’s time for the second phase. Before going to sleep, sit up in your bed, close your eyes, and get into a relaxed state of mind. The aim here is to access the Alpha brainwave level, which is the state of relaxed alertness typically experienced during meditation.

There are numerous ways to access Alpha, with one notable method taught by Jose Silva in the Silva Method. Here are the quick steps:

  • Close your eyes and imagine you are looking slightly above eye level. (This eye position encourages your brain to produce Alpha waves.)
  • Take a deep breath. When you exhale, mentally see and say the number ‘3’ three times.

  • To deepen your relaxation, you can do the countdown deepening technique by counting down from 10 to 1. On each number, feel yourself dropping deeper, getting more and more relaxed.

Keep in mind, this is just a suggested way to enter a relaxed state. If you are an experienced meditator, you can simply get relaxed in any way that works for you.

Step 5: Replay the Mental Video of Your Problem

While still in the alpha state, replay the same mental video of your problem that you created earlier in the day for a third time. Visualize the scene in your mind, focusing on the details and emotions depicted in your video. Engage your senses fully and immerse yourself in the experience.

Step 6: Surrender the Mental Video of Your Problem to Higher Intelligence

After reviewing that video, visualize passing the mental video to higher intelligence for this all-knowing power to resolve it. Use your imagination to symbolize its transfer, whether its ejecting the movie from a DVD player and offering it up to higher intelligence, seeing the movie vanish into the ether as it is released into the universe, or any other symbolic act of release.

Step 7: Craft the Solution to Your Problem

After relinquishing the problem to higher intelligence, it’s time to visualize the problem as fully resolved.

Create a new mental video detailing the ideal end result to your problem, seeing this outcome as if it has already been achieved.

In the Silva Method, Silva instructors emphasize visualizing the solution unfolding in a step-by-step process.

Why a step-by-step process?

Consider a problem like feeling stuck in your job and wanting to start your own business but being unsure if you should take the risk. In this step, you might envision your final result as doing work you love doing every day and all the steps that led you to that outcome. So for example, you could see yourself enrolling in a business class that really inspires you. Then maybe you start a side hustle and land your first clients. Then maybe you see yourself resigning from your job gracefully, confidently, and excited about the next chapter you are embarking on.

The aim is to visualize as many of the details and preconditions of your ideal result as you can, even if you’re unsure of the exact path to get there.

Step 8: Surrender the Mental Video of Your Solution to Higher Intelligence

After creating the mental video of your solution, hand it over to higher intelligence, just as you did in Step 6, trusting it will guide you toward the desired outcome.

Step 9: Go Directly To Sleep

Now that the visualization portion of the technique is completed, you must go directly to sleep. Do not stay awake and watch TV. Do not go on your phone and check your email. Do not try to spoon with your partner.

This is a crucial aspect of the technique because we are tapping into the Delta brainwave level, associated with creative potential and enhanced receptivity to higher intelligence — which can only be accessed during sleep. According to Jose Silva, Delta serves as a doorway to higher realms of consciousness, where profound insights can be accessed to help us solve our problems.

Over the next three days, Jose Silva advises to be on the lookout for any indications that the problem is beginning to resolve itself or insights that may lead to a solution.

  • Pay attention to coincidences and synchronicities related to your problem.
  • When you think of the problem, think of it in the past tense as if it has already been resolved This helps build a sense of expectancy.
  • Trust your intuition and remain open to unexpected solutions.

  • After you do the technique for a specific problem, don’t do the technique for the same issue for the next three days. If no answer emerges within this timeframe, repeat the process again.
  • Initially, focus on one problem at a time. As you become more comfortable with the technique, you can start using it for other problems.
