The desert seems infinite. Never-ending. There are always numerous paths to take, rarely any of which are straightforward.
Just like the spiritual path, the desert has bumps in the road and elements in the environment that can make things uncomfortable.
There’s the suffocating heat.
The rugged terrain.
You’re alone with no one around, which feels like for miles.
So, imagine being lost in a desert all by yourself. You’re trying to get back home — but don’t know which way to go or which path to take.
You’re out of water, exhausted, and ready to give up.
Yet, there’s beauty all around you: a gorgeous, magnificent, vast desert landscape.
Would you notice it?
Would you take the time to marvel at the beauty: the imposing mountains rising in the distance, encasing nature’s handiwork?
Would you become aware of the neutral colors? The texture of the sand? The accents of deep greens and the various desert flowers scattered around your path?
What if, while on your journey, you accidentally prick your finger on a cactus needle? Would you be more focused on the drops of blood dotting your finger or delight in the love tap you just received from god?
Physically, you might be on the verge of collapsing, and emotionally, you likely feel frustrated and scared, but what if you surrendered to this desert?
What if you let go of control and trusted the path before you?
Would you then awaken to the beauty all around you?
Would you finally begin to see clearly and recognize the desert as god itself?
I have faced some tough challenges and moments of crisis that were poised to crush my spirit in recent times. But I have found when I can surrender myself truly and fully to these challenges and let go of all resistance, clarity, grace, and even gratitude begins to light my path.
I created the meditation below with the hope it can help you cultivate the trust and courage you need to face any difficult roads that lie before you.
