“Sometimes I go about in pity for myself. and all the while, a great wind carries me across the sky.”
That line is a Native American proverb from the Ojibwe tribe I heard years ago. It stayed with me but I never fully understood it—not until life began revealing its meaning in the most unexpected ways.
Because what if, even in the moments when everything feels like it’s falling apart, you’re not falling at all?
What if you’re actually being carried?
Life gives us plenty of chances to collapse into fear or frustration.
The unexpected email. The criticism you didn’t anticipate. The bill you weren’t ready for. The plans that fall apart the moment you need them to hold together.
Not long ago, I found myself in one of those moments.
I was working on a project I had poured months into—late nights, early mornings, every ounce of focus I had. Just days before going live, with everything finally falling into place, the company that hired me sent a barrage of “urgent fixes.” Not suggestions. Just demands.
And something in me snapped.
My chest tightened. My mind spiraled.
My whole body fell into that familiar identity: the one that wants to prove, defend, and explain. The one who believes everything is happening to me.
You might know that place. The place where you forget who you really are.
And yet awareness is what turns breakdowns into breakthroughs.
In the middle of my frustration, right when I felt myself slipping, I remembered that line:
“Sometimes I go about in pity for myself…”
I started laughing.
Because in that moment, yes… I was absolutely going about in pity for myself.
But then the second half of the proverb landed:
“…and all the while, a great wind carries me across the sky.”
And something softened.
Nothing in the situation changed. But I changed.
The fog lifted.
My identity shifted—from the version of me that felt attacked and undervalued to the deeper version of me who remembered he was being carried.
That’s when I realized:
Self-pity isn’t weakness. It’s simply a sign that you’ve forgotten your deeper nature. And the moment you remember, you return to yourself.

We all slip. We all lose the thread. We all tell ourselves painful stories:
These stories are part of the human experience—and our soul didn’t come here to avoid them. It came here to learn through them.
But they’re still illusions.
Temporary weather across the sky of who you are. And beneath that weather, the great wind is still moving you.
You are always being carried—even when you can’t feel it, even when you don’t trust it, even when everything looks like it’s falling apart.
Especially then.
Being carried doesn’t mean your life becomes perfect. It doesn’t mean you avoid hardship or your pain isn’t real.
It’s the recognition that a deeper intelligence is already moving you toward who you’re becoming. When you stop reacting and return to presence, you reconnect with that current. And from that connection, you don’t have to chase answers—you create the stillness where answers finally find you.
You don’t have to rise out of your funk by force. You rise by remembering.
And the moments that feel like you’re falling short often become the very moments that reveal your next identity.
Take a brief moment to close your eyes and feel what it means to be carried.

Sit comfortably and soften your breath.
Feel the support of your body—
how it’s being held effortlessly
by the surface beneath you.
Notice your breath
lifting your chest on its own.
And imagine…
just for this moment…
a warm, gentle wind at your back.
Not pushing you.
Not disturbing you.
Simply carrying you…
the way life already is.
Let yourself feel
that support beneath you…
around you…
within you.
And as you feel that support, let yourself connect…
with a small part of you inside that whispers,
“I’m going to be okay…”
Trust that.
That whisper is your deeper identity —
the one who knows the way.
As you move through your life, consider this:
No matter the trouble, no matter how stuck you feel, no matter how much didn’t go your way— there is always a deep place inside you that knows:
You’re going to be okay.
Something greater is guiding you. Something wiser is carrying you. And the storm you’re in today will someday be the wind that lifts you to the next version of yourself.
You’re being carried.
Even now. Even here.
