A Mental Experiment To Explore The Present Moment You can’t escape the word “presence” when talking about meditation, mindfulness, or any…
Meditation promises an oasis of calm. Yet, the barrier to entry can seem daunting.
The most common hurdles during meditation are:
Here is how to overcome them to unlock a consistent, deepening practice.
Becoming frustrated by mental chatter during meditation doesn’t mean you’re failing; it means you’re human. Racing thoughts aren’t adversaries; they’re the rhythm of your consciousness and companions during your practice. Instead of resisting them, embrace them with curiosity and kindness.
Simply acknowledge the mental hustle, and gently guide your focus back to your chosen point of concentration—be it your breath, sounds in the room, or sensations in your body.
The stereotypical image of a perfectly crossed-legged yogi might deter many. The truth is there are no rigid rules when it comes to posture. Whether you sit in a chair, lie on your back, or stand tall, find a posture that works for you.
Do what feels comfortable and what your body most needs in this moment.
The goal is not to contort your body but to create a vessel for your mind to explore tranquility and bear witness to the life unfolding inside you. Experiment with different postures until you discover one that harmonizes with your body and allows you to sink into the experience.
Physical discomfort can quickly hijack a meditation practice. Instead of ignoring it, dive into the sensations. Use the discomfort as your point of focus during your practice.
Feel the textures, colors, and movement of the sensations.
By immersing yourself in it, you change your relationship with the pain. It becomes a fleeting visitor rather than an unwelcome intruder. This shift in perspective transforms your pain and discomfort into a vehicle for heightened self-awareness and presence.
The modern human brain is a junkie for constant stimulation and is not used to sitting in silence and doing nothing. That means distractions and boredom are inevitable. To combat this, turn the experience into a fun little challenge:
Transforming these moments into a lighthearted challenge not only diffuses frustration but also strengthens your resolve to remain anchored in the present.
Hurdles are not roadblocks in meditation, but guideposts. They are elements of your experience and the key is to use them in your practice as stepping stones for you to go deeper and become more alive.
Whether your mind is racing, you can’t sit still, bothered by physical discomfort or bored and distracted, the essence of meditation will always be a constant dance between stillness and movement. Your job is to bring yourself to the dance floor every day and go with the rhythm.
